Ultrasound in Pregnancy

Indications for Ultrasound in early pregnancy.
First trimester scans (within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy)

  • assess for live fetus
  • investigate pain and / or PV bleeding,
  • Nuchal translucency measurement (11-14 weeks)
  • assess abdominal or pelvic pain ,
  • query ectopic gestation
  • determine gestation for unsure dates
  • confirm multiple pregnancy
  • recurrent miscarriage
  • termination

Early in the pregnancy, a transvaginal scan may be necessary for comprehensive imaging.

If your patient is considering a termination please indicate this on the referral to enable our staff to manage this ultrasound examination sensitively and ask the patient if they wish to receive the images.

The patient requires an appointment.

Please contact us if your patient requires an urgent appointment.


Preparation for the examination:

Patients over 12 weeks who have not had a previous examination in this pregnancy.

Please ask your patient to empty their bladder one hour prior to the appointment and immediately drink one litre of water.

For patients over 12 weeks who have had a previous dating scan in this pregnancy

No preparation required.

On average an ultrasound scan takes between 10 and 30 minutes.
The scan will be performed by either a Radiologist or a Sonographer.

The patient may wish to bring family or a support person.  We may restrict the number of visitors in the ultrasound room due to the room size.

There is no after care.
The images & report will be sent to the patient at home and a report to the Referrer.

Urgent reports will be phoned through to the Referrer.

If your patient does not want to receive the films please indicate this on the referral or ask the patient to let us know.
